Voice interviews vs one-way video

Both replace the phone screen and let a candidate answer in their own time. What each one asks of the candidate is not the same.

One asks for a recording. The other asks a question and listens to the answer.

What actually differs

What they do
Voice interviewHas a conversation and answers what is asked next.
One-way videoRecords themselves answering questions set in advance.
What they need
Voice interviewA device, and somewhere they can talk.
One-way videoA camera, light, a quiet room, a few uninterrupted minutes.
What it captures
Voice interviewHow someone reasons aloud, and what they do when pressed.
One-way videoPresentation, delivery, and how someone comes across on camera.
What it misses
Voice interviewAnything you have to see. A portfolio, a demo, presence.
One-way videoThe follow-up. A fixed prompt cannot ask what you meant.
What you do
Voice interviewReads a scorecard, then the quote behind it.
One-way videoWatches the recordings, or reads a summary of them.

Where the review time goes

Two hundred applicants at three minutes of video each is ten hours of watching.

A summary is faster than a recording. It is also not the words the candidate said.

Kira returns a band, a 1–5 per criterion with a written anchor, and one or two timestamped quotes.

Nothing reaches the scorecard that Kira cannot point back to in the transcript.

What a conversation buys

  • The follow-up

A thin answer gets one more question, right then, while the candidate is still on the line.

  • Evidence you can forward

Timestamped quotes against each criterion, not a link to a recording somebody else has to watch.

  • A lower bar to clear

No camera, no lighting, no quiet room, no video bandwidth. Someone on a break can take part.

In a field study of 70,884 call-center applicants, 78% chose an AI voice interviewer over a human one. It also measured 18% more starts and 17% better one-month retention.

When a one-way video interview fits better

  • The role has to be seen. Sales, presenting, anything performed on camera.
  • You need to see something specific: a portfolio, a demo, a workspace.
  • Your panel wants to review video responses together. Kira provides audio recordings and transcripts, without video.
  • You already score recorded answers against a rubric, and it works. That is not a process worth replacing.
  • You want candidates to re-record. Spark Hire and Willo both allow retakes.

Both formats are async, and plenty of teams run both. Kira does the talking half.

If it is, our guide to one-way video interview software compares the platforms that do it.

Choosing voice over video was deliberate: why we chose voice, and what we won’t build.
